Masjid Ghiedmatiel Islamia, affectionately known as the Taronga Road Masjid, stands as a proud symbol of transformation, faith, and service to the community. Originally a church complex, the property was acquired in the late 1990s and thoughtfully converted into a vibrant multi-purpose Islamic center. Today, it serves as a hub of spiritual, educational, and social activity for the surrounding community. The property, spanning 4,516 square meters, is managed by the Rondebosch East Islamic Community Trust (REICT). It offers a central location with ample parking.
Over the past 25 years, the center has flourished into an iconic institution, meeting the religious and social needs of a growing community. At its heart, the Masjid hosts five daily prayers, Friday congregational prayers (Jumu’ah), weekly Thikr gatherings, educational classes and a program-rich Ramadan, including Tarawiħ prayers, I’tikaaf, spiritual talks and community iftars.
Additionally, it serves as a hub for sacred knowledge, with regular lectures and classes delivered by the Imams. The complex also offers a well-equipped Ghusl Khana, supporting burial societies and surrounding communities during their times of need. With the steady growth of the community, the Taronga Road Masjid has become a bustling center for worship and spiritual upliftment.
However, the current facilities are no longer sufficient to meet the growing demand for space during congregational prayers, community events, and educational services. To address these needs, we are embarking on a phased expansion project to enhance the center’s capacity and functionality. This development, with a projected cost of R21 million, will accommodate an additional 700-1000 worshippers and create more opportunities for educational classes, spiritual enrichment and community events. The expansion project will be implemented over four phases.
